Can acupuncture help seniors heal faster after hip surgery?

NCT ID NCT07178756

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether adding acupuncture to usual care (painkillers and physical therapy) can improve pain and mobility in people recovering from hip fracture surgery. About 90 adults aged 40–99 will be randomly assigned to receive either standard care alone or standard care plus acupuncture twice a week for four weeks. Researchers will track pain, hip function, walking speed, and leg strength for up to a year after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
acupuncture
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, drug-free way to reduce pain and speed up recovery after hip fracture surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 90 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Acupuncture may not provide significant benefit over standard care alone.
