Hope for cancer patients: drug may shield ears from chemo damage
NCT ID NCT07364747
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether acetylcysteine, a drug often used for other purposes, can prevent hearing loss caused by cisplatin chemotherapy. About 40 adults receiving high-dose cisplatin will get either acetylcysteine or a placebo after each chemo session. Researchers will measure hearing changes over time to see if the drug offers protection.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
acetylcysteine (N-acetylcysteine)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple way to prevent permanent hearing loss in patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial with only 40 participants. The results may not apply to all patients, and acetylcysteine might not provide significant protection or could have side effects.
