New drug cocktail aims to fight kidney cancer when immunotherapy fails
NCT ID NCT06835972
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether combining two oral drugs, abemaciclib and cabozantinib, is safe and effective for people with advanced clear cell or translocation kidney cancer that has already been treated with immunotherapy. The trial has two phases: first, finding the best dose with minimal side effects (phase 1b), then measuring how often tumors shrink (phase 2). About 43 participants will be enrolled.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- abemaciclib and cabozantinib (two oral drugs)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for people with advanced kidney cancer whose disease has progressed after immunotherapy.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-phase trial with only 43 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The drug combination may cause significant side effects or fail to shrink tumors.
