Scientists probe body fluids to unravel deadly gut infection
NCT ID NCT04427891
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at 50 patients with peritonitis caused by a burst diverticulum in the colon. Researchers will measure 92 inflammatory proteins in abdominal fluid and blood, and analyze tissue and bacteria changes. The goal is to better understand why some people develop this life-threatening infection, not to test a new treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could help doctors better understand why diverticulitis leads to life-threatening peritonitis, potentially pointing toward new ways to predict or treat it.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early descriptive study with no treatment being tested. It only looks at biological changes, so it won't directly lead to a new therapy. Results may not apply to all patients.
