First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 32 times

Summary

This early-stage study tested a gene therapy that delivers a protective protein called GDNF directly to the brain in 25 people with advanced Parkinson's disease. The goal was to see if it is safe and if it might help protect dopamine-producing brain cells. Participants received the treatment through a special infusion during surgery and were followed for up to 5 years.
