Super MRI scans reveal hidden hand damage in scleroderma patients

NCT ID NCT04223817

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 11, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study used a very powerful 7 Tesla MRI to take detailed pictures of the hands of 50 people with systemic sclerosis (a rare autoimmune disease) and healthy volunteers. The goal was to better understand bone, joint, and blood vessel problems in the hands. Researchers looked for signs of damage like bone swelling, joint inflammation, and narrowed blood vessels. This was an observational study, not a treatment trial, so it aimed to gather knowledge rather than test a new therapy.
