Could a common cancer drug help tear duct surgery succeed?

NCT ID NCT07154121

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether applying 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) during tear duct surgery can improve success for people with a small tear sac and blocked tear ducts. The trial will enroll 100 adults who need endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (En-DCR). Half will get standard surgery plus a 5-FU-soaked sponge at the surgical site; the other half will get standard surgery plus saline. Success is measured by symptom relief and a clear tear duct at six months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

5-fluorouracil (5-FU)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to improve surgical success for people with a small tear sac and blocked tear ducts.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 100 participants. The drug is applied during surgery, but it may not improve outcomes and could cause side effects like irritation or delayed healing.
