Can a 40 hz burst of sound silence tinnitus?
NCT ID NCT06646302
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a special 40 Hz burst of sound can provide longer-lasting relief from tinnitus (ringing in the ears) compared to standard continuous sound therapy. Researchers enrolled 265 adults with chronic tinnitus and used EEG to measure brain activity changes. The goal is to find a more effective way to temporarily suppress tinnitus and understand how the brain responds.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Personalized 40 Hz broadband or pure tone acoustic stimulation
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a more effective, personalized sound therapy for temporary tinnitus relief.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with no control group, so results may not generalize. The relief is temporary and may not work for everyone.
