3D-Printed crowns take on milled crowns in dental showdown

NCT ID NCT07633574

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two ways of making dental crowns for back teeth that have had root canals: 3D-printing from a ceramic-filled resin versus milling from a ceramic block. Sixty adults will receive one of these crowns and be checked for fractures, fit, and color over two years. The goal is to see which method produces more durable and reliable restorations.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dental crown (3D-printed ceramic-filled photopolymer resin or CAD/CAM milled hybrid nano-ceramic)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that 3D-printed crowns are as good as or better than milled ones, offering a faster, cheaper option for restoring damaged back teeth.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Crowns could chip, break, or discolor over the 24-month study period.
