New MRI technique aims to sharpen arthritis bone erosion detection
NCT ID NCT06383585
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Mayo Clinic study tests a new 3D MRI sequence called oZTEo, enhanced with deep learning, to detect bone erosions in the hands of people with inflammatory arthritis. The goal is to see if this advanced scan finds erosions better than standard MRI or X-rays. The study will enroll 25 adults who already have hand X-rays showing bone damage and are scheduled for a routine hand MRI.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
3D DL oZTEo MRI pulse sequence (imaging device)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could improve how doctors spot bone damage in arthritis patients, leading to earlier treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early study (25 people) testing a new imaging method. It may not show clear benefits over standard MRI, and results may not apply to all patients.
