3D scans could predict chest recurrence after funnel chest surgery
NCT ID NCT07498699
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed study followed 69 people with pectus excavatum (funnel chest) who had a Nuss bar removed after about 2-3 years. Researchers took 3D images of the chest at four time points to see how the chest wall changes after bar removal. The goal was to find factors that might predict if the chest shape will return to its original form, which could help doctors decide the best time to remove the bar.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors personalize the timing of Nuss bar removal to reduce the chance of chest wall retraction or recurrence.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not identify clear predictors, and results may not apply to all patients.
