MONDO:0007006Disease involving the ulnar nerve from its origin in the brachial plexus to its termination in the hand. Clinical manifestations may include paresis or paralysis of wrist flexion, finger flexion, thumb adduction, finger abduction, and finger adduction. Sensation over the medial palm, fifth finger, and ulnar aspect of the ring finger may also be impaired. Common sites of injury include the axilla, cubital tunnel at the elbow, and Guyon's canal at the wrist. (From Joynt, Clinical Neurology, 1995, Ch51 pp43-5)

Laser test could objectively measure nerve pain for first time
Diagnosis CompletedThis study tested whether a diode laser can act as a biomarker to measure neuropathic pain in people with peripheral neuropathy. Researchers compared pain responses to a lidocaine patch versus a placebo patch in 75 participants. The goal was to see if the laser test could disting…

Shock waves vs lasers: which eases Burn-Related nerve pain better?
Symptom relief CompletedThis study tested two non-invasive treatments—high-intensity laser therapy and shock wave therapy—for people with cubital tunnel syndrome after an arm burn. 75 adults with healed burns and confirmed ulnar nerve problems received either laser or shock wave therapy plus nerve glidi…

New anesthesia mix may ease pain after hand surgery
Symptom relief CompletedThis study tested two local anesthesia methods for hand, wrist, or elbow surgery. One used lidocaine alone, the other added ropivacaine for longer pain relief. 91 adults participated. Researchers measured pain and recovery quality 48 hours after surgery to see if the combination …

Healthy nerve sizes revealed: ultrasound study sets new standard
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study aimed to find the normal ultrasound size of the ulnar nerve at the elbow in 50 healthy adults. Participants had no history of ulnar nerve problems. Researchers measured the nerve's surface area to establish a reference range, which could help diagnose nerve issues in t…

New device may predict recovery after nerve surgery
Knowledge-focused CompletedThis study tested whether a device that measures muscle vibrations (mechanomyography) during surgery can predict recovery in 23 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome or peroneal nerve entrapment. Researchers tracked patient-reported outcomes and disability scores after nerve deco…
