New surgical wash aims to cut joint infection risk in 7,600 replacement patients

NCT ID NCT05543941

First seen May 29, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a new surgical irrigation solution called XPERIENCE can lower the risk of joint infection after hip or knee replacement better than the standard dilute Betadine wash. About 7,600 adults having primary hip or knee replacement will be randomly assigned to receive one of the two washes before the wound is closed. The main goal is to see how many develop an infection within 90 days after surgery.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

XPERIENCE Advanced Surgical Irrigation (a device/solution applied to the wound during surgery)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a better way to prevent serious joint infections after hip or knee replacement surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a large trial, but it compares two existing approaches, so the difference may be small. The solution is new, so unexpected side effects or no benefit are possible.

Conditions

The condition(s) this trial relates to.

arthritic joint disease osteoarthritis osteoarthritis, hip osteoarthritis, knee osteonecrosis periprosthetic joint infection prevention target
