Could a drug combo during surgery speed up recovery?
NCT ID NCT06884540
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether giving dexmedetomidine and lidocaine during major non-cardiac surgery can help patients recover faster and with less pain. About 100 adults having elective surgery will be randomly assigned to receive one of these drugs or standard care. The main goal is to see if a larger trial is possible, not yet to prove the drugs work.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dexmedetomidine and lidocaine
What this could lead to
If this works, it could lead to a simple way to improve recovery after major surgery and reduce reliance on opioids.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study testing feasibility, not effectiveness. The drugs may not improve outcomes or could cause side effects like low blood pressure.
