Obesity and diabetes: scientists hunt for hidden clues in body tissues

NCT ID NCT02861781

First seen May 09, 2026

Summary

This study collects blood and tissue samples from 270 severely obese patients during bariatric surgery to uncover new biological factors that lead to type 2 diabetes. Participants are grouped by their metabolic status: those with diabetes, insulin resistance, or normal insulin sensitivity. By comparing these groups, researchers hope to identify proteins, genes, and other molecules that play a role in the disease.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could reveal new biological targets for preventing or treating type 2 diabetes in people with severe obesity.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not lead directly to new therapies, and results may not apply to all patients.

Conditions
