Tiny plastics found in heart Arteries—What does it mean for your health?

NCT ID NCT07291609

First seen Jan 04, 2026

Summary

This study looks for micro- and nanoplastics in the blood of the heart's arteries in 120 people with chronic coronary syndrome. Participants will have a standard heart CT and an angiogram, and a small blood sample from the heart will be tested for plastic particles. The goal is to see if the amount of plastic in the blood is linked to the amount of plaque in the arteries. This is an observational study—it does not test any treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could reveal whether microplastics in heart arteries are linked to plaque buildup, pointing to pollution as a possible heart disease risk factor.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures and correlates—it cannot prove that microplastics cause heart disease. Results may not lead to any direct medical changes.

Conditions
