Could antibody shots replace daily HIV pills for kids? new trial begins in botswana

NCT ID NCT06508749

First seen May 13, 2026

Summary

This study in Botswana tests whether giving three powerful antibodies by infusion can help children who started HIV treatment early keep the virus suppressed without taking daily antiretroviral pills. About 41 children aged 2 to 12 will receive the antibodies while stopping their usual medication for a period. The goal is to see if the antibodies alone can control the virus and protect the immune system.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

three broadly neutralizing antibodies (VRC07-523LS, PGDM1400LS, PGT121.414.LS)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way for children with HIV to stop daily antiretroviral therapy and still keep the virus under control using periodic antibody infusions.

What could go wrong

This is an early Phase I/II trial with only 41 children, so results may not apply broadly. The antibodies may not prevent viral rebound, and some children could experience side effects or need to restart daily pills.
