Fasting before surgery: hidden danger for kids?
NCT ID NCT07259629
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 25, 2026
Summary
This study looks at how often children develop low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) after fasting before anesthesia for elective procedures. Researchers will monitor blood sugar levels in over 6,500 children aged 1 month to 18 years to find a clear definition of hypoglycemia and identify risk factors. The goal is to improve fasting guidelines and prevent harm.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to clearer safety guidelines for fasting before anesthesia in children, reducing the risk of low blood sugar.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not testing a treatment. It may not produce definitive results due to its large, diverse population and lack of a control group.
