Slow and steady anesthesia may protect older patients' blood pressure
NCT ID NCT06980688
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether slowly increasing the dose of the anesthetic drug propofol based on a patient's needs keeps blood pressure more stable than giving a standard starting dose. Researchers will enroll 320 adults aged 55 and older having non-cardiac surgery. The goal is to see if a personalized approach reduces dangerous drops in blood pressure during the first 30 minutes of anesthesia.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
propofol and remifentanil (anesthetic drugs)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a safer way to start anesthesia for older adults, reducing drops in blood pressure.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study focused on a short-term measure (blood pressure) rather than long-term outcomes. The results may not apply to all surgeries or patients.
As listed by the trial registrant
The condition terms exactly as the trial's registrant entered them.
