Hidden hernia dilemma: to fix or not to fix?
NCT ID NCT07461558
First seen Mar 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 17, 2026 · Updated 10 times
Summary
This study looks at what to do when a surgeon finds a small, symptom-free hernia on the opposite side during a routine hernia repair. Some doctors fix it right away to prevent future problems, while others prefer to leave it alone to avoid extra surgery risks. About 380 adults with a known hernia on one side will be randomly assigned to either have the hidden hernia repaired immediately or monitored for two years. The goal is to compare recovery, quality of life, and whether watching and waiting leads to more complications or the need for later surgery.
