New alert system cuts unnecessary antibiotics in pneumonia patients

NCT ID NCT05976581

First seen Apr 15, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tested a new way to help doctors decide when antibiotics are needed for hospitalized patients with suspected pneumonia. An electronic alert guided testing to tell if the infection was viral or bacterial. Patients with viral results were randomly assigned to either receive a special message to stop antibiotics or usual care. The goal was to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use without harming patients.
