Smart alerts help doctors skip unnecessary antibiotics for pneumonia

NCT ID NCT05976581

First seen Apr 15, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tested a way to help doctors use antibiotics more carefully in patients hospitalized with suspected pneumonia. An electronic alert guided testing to tell if the infection was viral or bacterial. Patients with signs of viral infection were randomly assigned to either receive a special message from the antibiotic team to stop antibiotics, or usual care. The goal was to see if this approach could reduce unnecessary antibiotic use without harming patients.
