Can an updated COVID-19 vaccine keep up with the virus?
NCT ID NCT07730450
First seen Jul 28, 2026 · Last updated Aug 07, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This trial is testing an updated version of the BNT162b2 COVID-19 vaccine in healthy adults aged 18 to 64. Participants will receive either the updated COVID-19 vaccine or a Tdap vaccine (for tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough) to compare safety and measure spike protein levels in the blood. The study aims to see how well the updated vaccine works and whether it is safe for seasonal use.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- an updated RNA-based COVID-19 vaccine (BNT162b2) targeting a SARS-CoV-2 variant
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could support the use of updated COVID-19 vaccines for seasonal protection in healthy adults.
- What could go wrong
- This is a phase 4 safety study with only 200 participants, so it may not detect rare side effects or fully predict real-world effectiveness.
