Scientists investigate why some preemies get deadly gut disease

NCT ID NCT00747851

First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study looks at how immune cells from premature babies respond to inflammation, to better understand why some develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a serious gut disease. Researchers will collect cord blood from 388 newborns, including both healthy full-term and premature infants at risk for NEC. They will analyze the cells in the lab and track which babies later get NEC. This is an observational study, not a treatment trial.
