New stent trick may prevent brain fog after liver shunt surgery

NCT ID NCT07349654

First seen Feb 01, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 13 times

Summary

This study tests a new way to place a stent (a small tube) in the liver to treat serious complications of cirrhosis, like bleeding or fluid buildup. The new technique uses a smaller balloon to keep the stent slightly narrow at first, which may lower the risk of a brain condition called hepatic encephalopathy (confusion and memory problems) that often happens after the standard procedure. The study will include 72 adults with cirrhosis who need this liver shunt, and will compare the new technique to the usual method to see if it reduces brain side effects while still controlling liver problems.
