Ultrasound may help pick better breathing tubes for kids with heart defects
NCT ID NCT07586592
First seen May 21, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 7 times
Summary
This study compares using ultrasound versus an age-based formula to choose the correct breathing tube size for children aged 3 months to 8 years with single ventricle heart conditions. The goal is to see which method leads to fewer breathing tube placement attempts and less post-surgery airway problems like stridor. The trial is currently recruiting 60 participants at Ain Shams University.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ultrasound device and Cole's formula (age-based calculation)
What this could lead to
If ultrasound proves more accurate, it could reduce breathing tube complications in children with single ventricle heart conditions.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study (60 participants) comparing two methods, not testing a new treatment. Results may not apply to all children or settings.
