New ultrasound test may predict dialysis lifeline success
NCT ID NCT04141358
First seen Mar 16, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study tested whether advanced ultrasound techniques can predict if a surgically created blood vessel connection (arteriovenous fistula or AVF) will work for dialysis in people with end-stage kidney disease. Researchers measured artery stiffness and function in 76 patients before and after surgery. The goal was to see if these measurements could identify which AVFs would mature enough to be used for dialysis.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors predict which patients will have a working AVF for dialysis, reducing failed surgeries and improving care.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed observational study. The ultrasound methods may not be widely available or accurate enough to change practice without larger trials.
