Are your extra heartbeats in your genes? twin study investigates

NCT ID NCT05866731

Summary

This study aimed to understand if genetics play a role in how often people experience common extra heartbeats, known as premature atrial contractions (PACs) and premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). Researchers monitored 156 sets of identical and fraternal twins using portable heart monitors to compare their heart rhythm patterns. By comparing twins who share different amounts of DNA, the study sought to provide the first estimate of how much these common heartbeats might be inherited.
