New study may spare early oral cancer patients unnecessary neck surgery

NCT ID NCT02743832

First seen Apr 30, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether a feature called tumor budding can guide doctors in deciding if neck lymph node removal is necessary for early-stage oral cancer. About 524 patients will be followed for five years to compare survival and quality of life between those who get the standard neck dissection and those who don't, based on tumor budding. The goal is to personalize surgery and avoid unnecessary procedures.
