Hidden cancer hunt: new tongue surgery aims to find the source
NCT ID NCT04151134
First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated May 17, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study looks at a new surgical technique called tongue base mucosectomy (TBM) to find the original cancer site in patients with head and neck cancer that has spread to lymph nodes but has no known starting point. About 100 patients will have their tongue base tissue removed and examined in detail. The goal is to see if this method can identify more hidden primary cancers than standard tests.
