New blood test may cut unnecessary transfusions in liver patients

NCT ID NCT04421924

First seen Jan 05, 2026 · Last updated May 18, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study looks at whether using a special blood test (thrombelastography) before a TIPS procedure can help doctors decide if patients with liver cirrhosis really need blood products or transfusions. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and reduces the amount of blood products used. About 39 adults with liver cirrhosis who need a TIPS shunt will take part.
