Pedaling while dialyzing: exercise may shield hearts of kidney patients

NCT ID NCT04877041

First seen Nov 20, 2025 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 21 times

Summary

This study tests whether a 12-week cycling program during hemodialysis can reduce heart muscle stress (called stunning) caused by dialysis. About 160 adults with end-stage kidney disease who are on thrice-weekly dialysis will either cycle or continue usual care. The main goal is to see if exercise during dialysis improves heart function and lowers heart damage markers.
