Could a gentler antibiotic beat gonorrhea without fueling superbugs?
NCT ID NCT07631364
First seen Jun 14, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This phase 3 trial compares a single intravenous dose of temocillin to the standard ceftriaxone shot for treating gonorrhea. The goal is to see if temocillin works just as well while having less impact on the gut's healthy bacteria, which can help prevent the rise of drug-resistant germs. The study plans to enroll 360 adults with asymptomatic gonorrhea and check for cure at day 21.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
temocillin (NEGABAN®) given as a single 2 g intravenous dose
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a safer antibiotic option for gonorrhea that is less likely to promote drug-resistant bacteria in the gut.
What could go wrong
This is a single-dose IV antibiotic study; it may not be as effective as the standard shot, and results may not apply to all populations or strains.
