New breathing index may prevent ventilator harm in ICU

NCT ID NCT06921655

First seen Feb 03, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 15 times

Summary

This study looks at 36 ICU patients with breathing failure who are on a ventilator. Researchers want to see if a new measure called the Pressure-Muscle Index (PMI) can help doctors set the ventilator to give just the right amount of support, avoiding too much help that can weaken the diaphragm or cause lung injury. The goal is to find a personalized ventilator setting that keeps patients safe.
