Whole blood vs. components: could a simpler transfusion save more trauma lives?

NCT ID NCT06495294

First seen May 15, 2026 · Last updated May 19, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at whether giving trauma patients whole blood instead of separate blood parts (red cells, plasma) before they reach the hospital is practical and improves outcomes. About 60 adults with major traumatic bleeding will be randomly assigned to receive either two units of whole blood or four units of separate blood parts during ambulance transport. The goal is to see if whole blood is easier to carry and transfuse, and whether it reduces deaths or the need for massive transfusions.
