Stretch breaks in surgery: a simple fix for surgeon pain?

NCT ID NCT07609420

First seen May 30, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests whether a 60-minute lecture on surgical ergonomics, a quick pre-surgery time-out, and 30-60 second stretch breaks every 90 minutes can reduce work-related pain in OBGYN doctors and trainees. Fifty participants from University Hospitals Cleveland will report their discomfort levels before and after the program. The goal is to see if these simple steps can lower pain and the need for painkillers.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Surgical ergonomics lecture, pre-incision ergonomics time-out, and intra-operative stretch breaks

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward simple ways to reduce pain and injury for surgeons during operations.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study with only 50 participants from one hospital, so results may not apply to all surgeons. The interventions are brief and may not be enough to prevent long-term problems.
