Gentle therapy may boost movement in preterm infants

NCT ID NCT06648213

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study tested whether a personalized physical therapy program helps early premature babies (born before 34 weeks) improve their motor skills while in the neonatal intensive care unit. Thirty infants received gentle movements, positioning, and sensory stimulation for 10-15 minutes three times a week from 34 to 36 weeks adjusted age. Researchers measured changes in general movements and neurological exams to see if the therapy supports development.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

individualized physiotherapy (positioning, movement, and sensory stimulation)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could improve motor skills and reduce developmental delays in premature infants.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 30 infants, so results may not apply to all premature babies. The therapy is supportive and not a cure for underlying conditions.
