Massive ICU study questions routine acid-blocker use

NCT ID NCT02467621

First seen May 22, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether giving a common acid-reducing drug (a proton pump inhibitor) to adults in the intensive care unit (ICU) helps prevent stress ulcers and stomach bleeding, and whether it affects survival. Over 3,300 critically ill patients with risk factors like shock or mechanical ventilation took part. The goal was to find out the true benefits and harms of this routine practice.
