Groundbreaking Two-Part transplant aims to fix diabetes and immune system in kids
NCT ID NCT03835312
Summary
This study is testing a new two-step treatment for children with a rare, severe genetic condition that causes both type 1 diabetes and a weakened immune system. First, doctors transplant umbilical cord blood stem cells to try to rebuild the child's immune system. If that is successful, they then transplant insulin-producing islet cells to potentially restore the body's ability to manage blood sugar. The goal is to control both the diabetes and the immune problems, which can be life-threatening.
