Scientists test stem cell transplant to fight leading cause of blindness

NCT ID NCT02286089

Summary

This early-stage study is testing the safety of a new treatment for advanced dry age-related macular degeneration, a major cause of vision loss. Doctors transplant lab-grown retinal cells derived from human embryonic stem cells into the back of the eye. The study involves about 24 patients with significant vision loss to see if the transplanted cells are safe, can survive, and might help slow the disease.
