Grow your own hip bone: stem cell patch could save joints

NCT ID NCT07101562

First seen May 09, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests a new way to treat early-stage femoral head necrosis (a condition where the hip bone dies due to poor blood flow). Doctors take a small sample of the patient's own bone marrow, grow the stem cells in the lab on a special bone scaffold, and then implant this 'tissue-engineered bone' into the damaged hip. The goal is to see if this can stop the bone from collapsing and avoid the need for a total hip replacement. The study involves 30 adults aged 20-65 with early (ARCO stage II) non-traumatic femoral head necrosis.
