New cell implant aims to control type 1 diabetes, but lifelong drugs needed

NCT ID NCT06651515

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 25 times

Summary

This study tested a new treatment called SR-02, which involves implanting insulin-producing cells into the abdomen of adults with type 1 diabetes who experience dangerous low blood sugar episodes. The goal was to see if the implant is safe and can help the body produce its own insulin again. However, participants would need to take lifelong immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection, so this is not a cure. The study was withdrawn before enrolling any participants.
