Could a common pill protect new Moms' hearts after preeclampsia?

NCT ID NCT07041281

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tests whether spironolactone, a blood pressure drug, can help women who had high blood pressure during pregnancy (preeclampsia or gestational hypertension) and are overweight. About 204 women will take either spironolactone or a placebo daily for 12 weeks after giving birth. Researchers will check their blood pressure and heart structure nine months later to see if the drug reduces long-term heart risks.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

spironolactone

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple daily pill to help women with past hypertensive pregnancy avoid long-term high blood pressure and heart problems.

What could go wrong

This is a mid-stage trial with 204 participants, so results are not final. Spironolactone can cause side effects like high potassium or kidney issues, and it may not improve heart health as hoped.
