New POEM technique aims to cut reflux risk in achalasia patients

NCT ID NCT07178821

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 25 times

Summary

This study compares two versions of a minimally invasive surgery (POEM) for achalasia, a condition where the esophagus doesn't relax properly. The standard surgery often causes severe heartburn (GERD). The modified version tries to preserve certain muscle fibers to lower that risk. 120 adults with achalasia will be randomly assigned to one of the two techniques and monitored for up to a year.
