First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a program called STEP that teaches teens skills like mindfulness, gratitude, and savoring positive moments. The goal is to see if it can reduce suicidal thoughts and attempts after a teen is discharged from inpatient psychiatric care. 216 teens will be randomly assigned to either STEP or standard care plus a safety app. The study is currently recruiting.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Behavioral intervention (STEP) focusing on mindfulness, gratitude, and savoring
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a practical, low-cost program to help teens reduce suicidal thoughts and attempts after a hospital stay.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage study without a drug or device. The intervention is behavioral, so results may vary widely and may not be easy to replicate in other settings.
