New shoulder block may spare patients' breathing during surgery

NCT ID NCT07486349

First seen Mar 22, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tests two types of nerve blocks for shoulder surgery to see which one is less likely to temporarily paralyze the diaphragm, the main muscle used for breathing. About 70 adults having elective shoulder surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either a standard interscalene block or a newer shoulder PENG block. The main goal is to measure how often diaphragm paralysis occurs 30 minutes after the block is given.
