Summary
This research study aimed to understand why sepsis patients in intensive care become vulnerable to additional infections. Researchers measured immune system function in 50 critically ill patients over five days to test whether sepsis causes prolonged immune suppression. The study collected blood and lung fluid samples but did not test any treatments.
