Ventilated patients take control of their own sedation in landmark trial
NCT ID NCT02819141
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 31 times
Summary
This study tested whether critically ill patients on breathing machines could safely manage their own sedation using a button-controlled device, instead of relying solely on nurses. 161 participants were randomly assigned to either self-manage their sedation or receive standard nurse-administered care. The goal was to see if this approach reduced anxiety, time on the ventilator, and confusion.
