Sniffing away the sting: scents may soothe newborns during heel pricks

NCT ID NCT07350980

First seen Jan 21, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looked at whether certain smells could make a common newborn procedure less painful. 120 healthy newborns had a heel prick for routine screening. Some babies were exposed to scents during the procedure. Researchers measured how long they cried, their heart rate, and a pain score to see if the scents helped.
