NCT ID NCT02584894

First seen Jun 23, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether using magnetic pulses (rTMS) on the brain while people recall their traumatic memories can reduce PTSD symptoms. 39 adults with PTSD for at least 3 months received either 10Hz or 1Hz rTMS over 2 weeks. Researchers measured changes in PTSD severity using standard scales.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

repeated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a new way to reduce PTSD symptoms by combining brain stimulation with recalling traumatic memories.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 39 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment may not work better than existing options.
